Homeowners

  • Proper lawn care – raise mower deck for deeper roots and improve infiltration

  • Minimize impervious surfaces – less hard surfaces will decrease runoff and allow for more water infiltration

  • Pollinator habitat – plant pollinator habitat to help reduce runoff

  • Use rain barrels -  catch the rainwater and use for watering plants when the weather gets dry. This helps to reduce runoff

Shore land homeowners

  • Proper lawn care – eliminate the use of fertilizers

  • Shoreline erosion control – keep natural vegetation or plant a natural     vegetation buffer on the shoreline

  • Septic system maintenance – have your septic system inspected to make sure it is operating correctly

  • Cover Crops – plant cover crops to keep the soil covered and in place year round

  • Grassed waterways and buffer strips–  trap sediment and nutrients before they reach water bodies

  • Nutrient Management Plan – apply fertilizer and manure based on soil and plant needs so that excess does not leave the field
