what is a watershed?

“Connect” –

that’s the word to think about when you picture a watershed.  A watershed described all the land that drains rainfall and snowmelt to a common outlet point, such as a lake or mouth of a bay.

Watersheds are important because the streamflow and water quality of a river or lake are affected by what is happening in the entire land area before it gets to the outflow point.  It’s been found that nearly all surface water interacts with groundwater at some point in time.  This means that we need to manage both water resources together, rather than separate entities.

The Pine Creek Watershed is located in northeast Wisconsin, just south of Manitowoc Wisconsin.  It covers an area of 21 square miles or approximately 13,409 acres of land into Lake Michigan.
